Reviving Panxiu (Summer 2015)

Several VCU students and alumni participated in a project focusing on reviving the art of Panxiu Embroidery by creating wearable art pieces. Several embroidered medallions were hand sewn in China and sent to the project members. Shelby received the two above and created a sheer nude dress and a cylinder bag. The dress features a motif to match the embroidery repeated again and again as a reverse appliqué. The bag has hand made tassels that hang from the bottom.

Like a Moth to the Flame (Fall 2014)

The inspiration behind this dress started at the VCU dance center. Each fashion student had got to watch the dancers' improvisations as they sketched. Then they were given a 58"x58" square of fabric, two 58" right triangles, and a 58" diameter circle. Fabric was not to be cut away from the shapes in any way, but it still had to be something easily danced in. Shelby draped the fabric with delicate pleats, comparing the dancers' movements to the way a moth flits around a light, and created a graceful moth-like gown. Her dress won best of her class, and she was rewarded with a free trip to Doha, Qatar to represent VCU in the 2015 Tasmeem Art Conference.
